Bangladesh imposes indefinite curfew amid violent protests
In response to escalating violence, the Bangladesh government has imposed an indefinite curfew starting at 6 pm on Sunday in Dhaka and other major cities across the country. The curfew, announced by the Home Ministry, affects the Dhaka Metropolitan area as well as all divisional headquarters, including Chittagong, Sylhet, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Barisal, Khulna, Mymensingh, and other city corporations and district headquarters.
The move comes after a day of intense clashes that resulted in at least 20 deaths and hundreds of injuries. The violence erupted between protesters, law-enforcement agencies, and ruling party-backed organizations in cities including Dhaka, Cumilla, Rangpur, Kishoreganj, Sirajganj, Pabna, Munshiganj, and Magura.
The Anti-discrimination Student Movement, which has been leading protests demanding quota reforms, initiated a nationwide non-cooperation movement on Sunday. The protesters are calling for the resignation of the government in light of the recent violence.
In addition to the curfew, mobile internet services have been shut down by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). The BTRC announced that 4G services will remain suspended until further notice, with only 2G services available for calls. This decision is aimed at curbing the spread of information related to the unrest.
The situation remains fluid as authorities and protesters face off amid heightened tensions across the country.
