The spotlight shines once again on the gaming industry as the prestigious Bafta Games Awards prepares for its 20th anniversary celebration at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall. Hosted by comedian Phil Wang, the event promises to honor the outstanding achievements in gaming over the past year.

Leading the nominations are highly anticipated titles such as Baldur’s Gate 3, Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake 2, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. With 2023 hailed as one of the best years in gaming history, the competition for the coveted golden mask is expected to be fierce.

Bafta, renowned for its recognition of excellence in film and television, has been acknowledging UK gaming talent since 2003. This year, the 2024 special award goes to the UK charity SpecialEffect for its commendable efforts since 2007 in making gaming accessible to disabled individuals.

Moreover, in a fan vote, Lara Croft from Tomb Raider has been named the most iconic video game character of all time.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold 10 million copies in three days to become the fastest-selling Zelda game.

In the highly anticipated “Best Game” category, the competition includes industry giants like Baldur’s Gate 3, Spider-Man 2, Super Mario Bros Wonder, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Alan Wake 2, and Dave the Diver.

The British game award features nominees from studios across the UK, including Bytten Studio for Cassette Beasts and Sad Owl for Viewfinder. The category also includes titles like Football Manager 2024, Disney Illusion Island, Dead Island 2, and Realms of Ruin.

Performance categories highlight the talent behind the games, with Baldur’s Gate 3 dominating nominations. The technical achievement award recognizes innovation in gaming, with nominees such as Spider-Man, Zelda, Alan Wake, Starfield, Final Fantasy XVI, and the PlayStation VR2 game Horizon: Call of the Mountain.

The ceremony will be presented by stand-up comedian Phil Wang, who expresses excitement at the prospect of celebrating the industry’s creativity and technical skill.
