Australia PM tells Russia to ‘Back Off’ after claims over espionage arrests
Russia has accused Australia of inciting “anti-Russian paranoia” following the arrest of a Russian-born couple, Kira and Igor Korolev, on espionage charges. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese responded forcefully, urging Moscow to “back off” amid rising tensions.
The Australian Federal Police announced on Friday that the couple, who hold dual citizenship, were charged with attempting to access materials related to national security. Despite the allegations, officials stated there was no significant compromise of sensitive information.
In a statement to Russian state news agency RIA, the Russian embassy criticized the arrest as a deliberate campaign to distract from the Australian government’s failures. They demanded written clarification from Australian authorities regarding the couple’s case and are considering consular assistance options.
Prime Minister Albanese, addressing the media in Brisbane on Saturday, condemned Russia’s interference in Australia’s domestic affairs, asserting that Russia engages in espionage globally. He emphasized the need for Russia to cease such activities.
The Korolevs appeared in Brisbane magistrate’s court on Friday, charged with preparing for an espionage offense, which could result in a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison. They did not apply for bail and are set to remain in custody until their next court appearance on September 20.
The case marks the first significant application of espionage laws enacted in 2018. Notably, Kira Korolev, 40, serves as an information systems technician in the Australian Army and allegedly instructed her husband to access her official accounts during a trip to Russia.
This incident comes as Australia strengthens its support for Ukraine, recently announcing a A$250 million ($170 million) military aid package at a NATO summit in Washington. The Australian government has also imposed sanctions on over 1,000 Russian individuals and entities and banned exports of aluminum ores to Russia.
As diplomatic tensions escalate, the situation continues to develop, with both nations firmly entrenched in their positions.
