Argentina thrashes Bolivia 6-0 as Messi shines with hat-trick

In a stunning display of football, Lionel Messi led Argentina to a commanding 6-0 victory over Bolivia in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup at the Monumental Stadium on Tuesday. This match marked Messi’s 10th international hat-trick and saw him directly contribute to two additional goals.

Making just his second appearance since recovering from a Copa America injury, Messi capitalized on a defensive error by Marcelo Suarez to score the opener in the 19th minute. Despite a few impressive saves from Bolivian goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra, Argentina doubled their lead in the 43rd minute. Messi provided a precise cross that Lautaro Martinez converted with ease.

Just before halftime, Messi was again the architect, assisting Julian Alvarez to make it 3-0, leaving Bolivia struggling to keep pace. The second half saw Argentina maintain control, although a goal from Nicolas Otamendi was ruled out for offside.

The breakthrough came in the 70th minute when substitute Thiago Almada netted from Nahuel Molina’s assist, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. In the closing moments, Messi showcased his brilliance again, dribbling past two defenders before unleashing a powerful shot for his second goal.

Just two minutes later, Messi completed his hat-trick with a left-footed drive, equaling Cristiano Ronaldo for the most international hat-tricks in men’s football, and bringing his total to 112 goals for Argentina.

“It’s really nice to come here, to feel the affection of the people; it moves me how they shout my name,” Messi remarked after the match. “As long as I feel good and can keep performing, I’ll keep enjoying it.”

With this victory, Argentina sits atop the standings with 22 points, rebounding strongly after a recent defeat and draw. The road to the 2026 World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, looks promising for Messi and his teammates as they continue their qualifying campaign.
