Amitabh Bachchan birthday: A celebration of legendary actor’s life and career

Hindi Cinema’s iconic star, Amitabh Bachchan, turned 81 on October 11. From his debut in 1969, he has captivated audiences with his magnetic presence. Besides being a versatile actor, he’s a TV personality, a soulful singer, and a former politician. Married to actress-politician Jaya Bachchan, they have two children, Abhishek and Shweta.

Amitabh’s remarkable career includes unforgettable roles in films like Sholay, Amar Akbar Anthony, Suhaag, Dostana, Kala Patthar, and Zanjeer. On his birthday, let’s explore his best works, fashion sense, memorable quotes, and more.

Born on October 11, 1942, in Allahabad, his parents were renowned poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and social activist Teji Bachchan. After schooling at Sherwood College in Nainital, he pursued a Science degree at Delhi University.

Despite early jobs at Shaw Wallace in Kolkata and as a freight broker at Bird and Company, he nurtured his passion for theatre.

His journey to stardom was marked by rejection from All India Radio and nights spent on a bench at Mumbai’s Marine Drive due to financial struggles. His thin stature led to further industry rejection, even after his 1969 debut in Mrinal Sen’s Bhuvan Shome and Saat Hindustani.

In 1973, Prakash Mehra’s film Zanjeer, written by Salim-Javed, changed Amitabh’s life. It became a blockbuster, introducing India to the “Angry Young Man.”
