Adipurush: Following the lifting of the film-related ban, the mayor of Kathmandu referred to the Nepali court as a “Indian slave.”
On June 16, 2023, Adipurush, a film starring Prabhas, was released. The Om Raut directorial’s prohibition has finally been removed by the Nepali court.
On Thursday, a Nepali court overturned the ban on Hindi films, including the Prabhas-starring Adipurush, and urged officials not to suspend the showing of any films that had been approved by the nation’s censor board.
Balendra Shah, the mayor of Kathmandu, ordered a ban on all Hindi films after a dialogue from the movie Adipurush in which Sita is referred to as “India’s daughter” caused controversy.
Shah stated on Thursday that he is prepared to accept any punishment but will not let the film’s showing since it concerns “Nepal’s sovereignty and independence”.
The exhibition of films with censor board approval shall not be banned, according to a temporary decision given by a single bench of the Patan High Court judge Dhir Bahadur Chand.
The petitioners are awaiting a written order from the court, according to Bhaskar Dhungana, president of the Nepal Motion Picture Association, who also informed the media.
He announced, “Now we will screen all films approved by the censor board.”
Following an uproar over its dialogue, which included the reference to Sita (played by Kriti Sanon) as “India’s daughter,” Adipurush and other Hindi films were banned in Nepal on Monday. Many people think that Sita, also known as Janaki, was born in Janakpur in southeast Nepal.
Shah declared on Facebook that he would not “obey the court’s order.”
“The fact that the film’s author claimed that India ruled over Nepal clearly demonstrates India’s malign intentions. To believe that Nepal was previously ruled by India indicates that the court and the government are both India’s slaves, he wrote in the article. “To call this a prank by the Nepal government and to grant a court ruling in favour of screening the movie means that Nepal was once under India’s domination.
He said, “I am prepared to accept any punishment for this, but the movie won’t function and won’t be permitted to run.”
As a result of the Kathmandu Mayor’s decision to forbid the showing of “Adipurush” in Kathmandu, the mayors of Dharan and Pokhara followed suit, which finally caused the exhibition of the film to be suspended throughout Nepal.
The movie, which was made by T-Series, Retrophiles, and UV Creations, also stars Sunny Singh, Devdatta Nage, and Saif Ali Khan.
