5.6-magnitude earthquake strikes Nepal, 140+ dead.
Over 140 individuals lost their lives in a remote region of Nepal when a shallow 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck early on a Saturday. The tremor occurred in the far west of the Himalayan country, just 18 kilometers deep. Videos and images shared on social media showed locals digging through rubble in the dark to rescue survivors, as the earthquake caused homes and buildings to collapse.
Mud houses were flattened or damaged, leaving survivors huddled outside in search of safety while emergency sirens wailed. The earthquake’s impact was felt as far away as New Delhi, with the epicenter located 42 kilometers south of Jumla.
Reports from various districts indicated human and physical damages due to the earthquake, and security forces were mobilized for rescue operations. Nepal’s Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal, expressed deep sorrow over the human and physical damage caused by the earthquake. The government deployed security forces to assist with rescue efforts.
Nepal is located on a major geological faultline, leading to frequent seismic activity. The most devastating earthquake in recent history occurred in 2015, resulting in significant casualties and destruction. India also offered assistance and expressed solidarity with Nepal during this latest earthquake.
